Back in 2011, I baked an Inception-inspired cake to celebrate Oscar night. This year, for Craft Week over at [livejournal.com profile] inceptiversary, I decided to bake that cake again, making use of the lessons I learned the first time around.

I just came from seeing Now You See Me, and I thought it was an AWESOME movie. It's a marriage of a heist movie and a movie about stage magicians, both of which are types of movies that I love, and the way they combined the two was a joy to watch. The story was well-done and creative, and Jesse Eisenberg, Morgan Freeman, and Michael Caine did a great job in it. If you like heist movies in general, or Inception in particular, or movies about stage magicians in general, or The Prestige in particular, or movies with lots of mystery and suspense in general, or any of the actors I've named, I highly recommend that you see this movie. :-D

(My only complaint was that one of the trailers attached to it was for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, and the trailer spoiled one of the major points of dramatic tension in the first book, which I still haven't finished yet. On the other hand, the fact that there are shipping wars in the fandom probably should have been my first clue as to how that particular point of tension was going to be resolved. ;-) )

Character A drops into Limbo and projection!Character B takes over Character A's waking life body."

I WILL get the rest of my Big Bang finished and posted before the deadline tonight. I'm planning on getting it done first thing today. I'm working on a fanfic that is now over 5,800 words long and just getting into the third act. I didn't want to post it until I had written the whole thing. When it's done, it'll easily be over the 7,300 words I need to earn my remaining 146 Big Bang points. :-)

Rating: G

Summary: According to Japanese folk belief, if one's first dream in the new year includes an eggplant, a hawk, and Mount Fuji, one will have good luck during that year. Evidently, this will be an exceptionally fortunate year for one Mr. Saito.
Author's Notes: This is Part 2 of my entry in the Big Bang challenge over at [livejournal.com profile] inception_land.

Back on October 2, I reported here on my LJ that I had had my first lucid dream. Since this journal is focused on fandom, I haven't been posting about my dreams here regularly, but last night's were just too amusing not to share with my fellow Inception fans.

Today I made the Inception cake that I posted the recipe for yesterday. It was a learning experience, but overall, I'm happy with the result.

Oscar night is tomorrow! Oscar night is tomorrow!

I'm so excited to watch the Oscars this year that I've been planning for a while to make a special Inception-themed cake to eat during the ceremony. This post contains my recipe for the cake. When I try this idea tomorrow, I will post photos.

One of this month's challenges over at [livejournal.com profile] inception_land is to create a fanmix. Though I've been making playlists of songs I associate with various works of fiction for many years, this is the first time I've ever made a real fanmix with front and back cover art.

The fanmix lies this way... )

This post contains the two drabbles I wrote for Day 1 of the December Drabble Challenge Marathon over at [livejournal.com profile] inception100. They were written for today's prompt, "Trapped," but I missed out on posting it to the community by ten minutes - when I looked, the next prompt had already been posted. I'm posting them here just to have them on my journal in their proper place in the ongoing series, and will post them to the community during the time set aside for past challenges, December 30th and 31st.

Title: A Dream Wedding, Part 1 of 2
Rating: G
Word Count: 818 (this part)
By: [livejournal.com profile] barbarafett
Category: Arthur/Ariadne, post-movie fic
Warning: Fluff ahoy!
Disclaimer: All characters are the property of Christopher Nolan. No money is being made off this work of fanfiction.
Summary: Arthur and Ariadne have their own ideas about how they want to do their wedding. Their friends help them make it happen.
Author's Notes: I've had this idea in my head for a while. I finally sat down and wrote it in response to the Free-For-All challenge (#14) at [livejournal.com profile] inception_land. I ran out of time to finish Part 2 before the deadline for the challenge, but I'm entering Part 1 anyway. Worst-case scenario, I just won't earn any points for it.

To the story! )

I just had my first true lucid dream! I didn't really consciously decide to, but after almost two months of secretly hoping it would happen, it happened. I am SO excited and happy and proud! I didn't become lucid until partway through, but I'll make the demarcation point clear in my writing. As always when I write about dreams, the events of the dream are written in the present tense, and any commentary I made on them after I woke up is written in the past tense and is set off by square brackets.

Social Call

This is #19 in my ongoing Inception drabble series, but chronologically, it goes after #17. I still haven't gotten to the point in the story where #18 happens yet; that's further down the road. Crossposted from [livejournal.com profile] inception100.

“Hello?”

“Yusuf? It's Ariadne.”

“Ariadne! Hello! It's been a long time- what's going on?”

“Don't worry, this is just a social call. I have news to share. I have been hired to perform an extraction.” She sounded very proud.

Yusuf hesitated. “Giving in to the temptations of the lifestyle, eh? Well, I wish you every success.”

“Thank you. The others don't really want me to go into it, either, but they're helping me anyway.”

“The others?”

“Everyone except Saito is with me. We're working together again.”

“Oh, good! You'll be fine.”
barbarafett: (Saito)
The last two times I've 'fallen in love with' a work of fiction and gotten involved in its fandom, I've written an essay about how I became a fan of that work, why I like it so much, and what being a fan has been like so far. Before that, I also wrote two other LJ entries describing how I got into two of my earlier fandoms. I've recently gotten into yet another fandom, so this entry is the fifth in my series of essays on that topic. All previous entries in the series are filed under my "newestfandom" tag, but it's neither necessary nor required that you read the previous ones first.

(I've realized that I never wrote one of these for "House" when I started getting into it last year. Oops. Maybe I should write a mini-post about why I like it.)

Cut because it's LONG. Spoilers for Inception, of course. Also, the scene that ends both the movie and graphic-novel versions of Watchmen is alluded to, though not described. )
barbarafett: (moon)
Recently, my friend [livejournal.com profile] mithrigil posted this awesome entry in which she described her relationship with two of the works of fiction she's a fan of, and their fans, by personifying the two fandoms and telling a story. I was inspired to do the same. [livejournal.com profile] kawaiigami , this one's for you.

So, last night, one of my dreams involved me riding shotgun in a big, black, limousine. Saito was driving it. (The guy in my icon, for the non-Inception-geeks on my flist.) We seemed to be on the fleeing end of a car chase.

Dude. Now I want to write fic where he's officially a member of the team, at least temporarily. I don't have time to write out all the fic ideas I already have. Maybe I'll go and repost this at the kink meme... it would be my first time actually posting a prompt there.

Today I went to Starbucks and managed to spill a full cup of coffee all over my table, shirt, jeans, and the floor. Not much of it got on the table, but a very little bit got onto the bottom of my laptop. I didn't think it would be a problem after it was dried off. So I went home, changed, and then went back to the Starbucks. A particular website made my laptop freeze, and then when I tried to do a brute-force restart using the power button, it told me it couldn't detect the hard drive. This may or may not have to do with the coffee, I don't know.

I'm currently posting from the desktop computer at home. I'm going to hook up the hard drive from my laptop to the desktop computer (using a handy USB adapter we have) when my dad brings the adapter home from work. It remains to be seen whether my own hard drive will remember that we even had a revised resume in progress, or whether the whole thing will have turned into scrambled egg. I hope my laptop is having fun building sandcastle skyscrapers. ;-) :-D

Update Saturday 9/18: Since I posted this entry, I've backed up everything from that hard drive, then put the hard drive back into the laptop. They both worked perfectly. I don't get it. Because my dad offered to help me, and because right after backing up everything seemed like a good time to do it, we spent most of the day wiping and reformatting that hard drive and rebuilding the entire system from the ground up, making it dual-boot for the first time. I'll be able to use Windows 7 for the Cisco Academy curriculum program, iTunes, Finale, Adobe Premiere if I ever get back to it, and JumpStart 3rd Grade if I ever get back to that, and Ubuntu for everything else. I'm looking forward to getting my laptop back. (I'm still on the big desktop computer right now.)

This entry was written in response to Challenge #8 over at [livejournal.com profile] inception_land: "Choose a song your character would suggest as the 'kick.'" I had a slightly different take on how my character (Robert Fischer) would end up making that suggestion.

This entry rated PG for language )
