Back in 2011, I baked an Inception-inspired cake to celebrate Oscar night. This year, for Craft Week over at [livejournal.com profile] inceptiversary, I decided to bake that cake again, making use of the lessons I learned the first time around.

The recipe I used in 2011, and pictures of my first PASIV cake, can be found in previous entries in this journal:

This time, I did a few things differently than the first time:

- This cake didn't take nearly as long to make, because I had four mixing bowls and four cake pans, so I could bake all four layers at once.

- The "limbo" layer came out much better this time, because now I know how to do marbling properly. Last time, I mixed the chocolate batter in too well, so it just looked like a solid chocolate cake. Here's a progress picture from this round - the marble layer is on the upper left.

- The "snow" layer is still made from a white cake mix, and this time I remembered to separate the eggs, so it actually is white.

- The "city" (caramel) layer came out much better this time. I'm not sure exactly why (maybe I used a different brand of caramel, or melted it better, or added more cream, or distributed it better over the cake batter before I baked it), but there was far less caramel stuck to the bottom of the cake pan than before.

- I decided to forego drawing a sky, clouds, and an airplane on the sides of the cake in favor of making the whole thing silver-gray.

- This time I used pre-made yellow decorator's frosting for the "Start" button, instead of making it myself with food dye. Sadly, I see my handwriting skill at drawing with a frosting tube hasn't improved.
