I've completely overhauled the poem I started working on yesterday. I'm much happier with it now.
Go to sleep now, let sweet slumber
Steal upon you quietly.
Sink into the dream, surrender
To its flight of fantasy.
Let the dream come softly on you,
Safely rest in its embrace;
There's no danger to befall you
In this peaceful, private place.
There's no monster in your closet,
Nothing waits beneath your bed.
There's no evil near to harm you,
Nothing lurks inside your head.
Be at peace, for here within you,
Thieves won't break in, steal, or kill.
Only your own thoughts surround you,
And they do not wish you ill.
As you sleep, your mind awakens,
Frees itself; thus dreams begin.
Like a windowpane, it opens
Onto vistas deep within.
There, subconscious thoughts and feelings
Are laid bare for you to see.
Have no fear, but go explore them;
Truths you find may set you free.
If, awaking, you discover
New ideas in your mind,
Your own dreaming brain uncovered
Those bright jewels for you to find.
How can dreams that are not real
Guide you, tell you something true?
It's a mystery, and yet,
The inspiration comes from you.

Notes
I set out to write a poem that can be read and understood on two different levels. On the first, surface level, it's a normal lullaby, such as a parent might sing to put a child to sleep. The second level emerges only if you read the poem with the knowledge that this is an Inception fanfic poem, and its true context (the true speaker, subject, and occasion) are what I said at the end of yesterday's post: "If I were an extractor, I'd want to have a soft, calming little tune to sing to the mark I'd just drugged while I was setting up the IV lines. *wicked, evil grin*" I had a ton of fun writing this poem. Someday, I hope to write a tune to sing it to. :-)
