barbarafettToday I worked on one of my short stories, "Christy's Reawakening," which is part of the Daydream Dome Chronicles. Here's the snippet of conversation I wrote today.
“About that chapter of the story you just wrote,” Christy said next, “why didn't I go out to the yard to investigate the flowers with everyone else? I could see them growing just as well as they could.”
Amy stared at Christy silently for a moment, then looked down in embarrassment. “You've caught me in a piece of lazy writing,” she answered. “All I wanted to do in that chapter was have Minami get her first medallion, tell the medallions' backstory, and have Vicki and Alex find out that they're going to hold some of them. You're going to learn all about the medallions in a later chapter. That's the only reason why I didn't Write you going outside to investigate. You're right, there is no good in-story reason why you shouldn't have. I'm sorry.”
“That can be fixed easily, can't it?”
“Too late – it's already my bedtime, and I have to turn this chapter in tomorrow. I'm so sorry.”
“Mmmmm,” said Christy noncommittally. Then she remembered something else from her past experience. “Am I correct in guessing,” she asked, “that whenever I'm in the world of the story, I won't know that it's a story – I won't remember you, or Subreality, or any of this?”
“That's right,” said Amy. “Whenever I'm Writing any of my characters, all of that meta-awareness is deactivated for them. It reactivates when I stop and they come back to Subreality, and as you know, when they do, they also remember everything that just happened in the story.”
“I see,” said Christy. “Interesting.”
“You're going to love it here, Christy,” said Amy, as she placed the last pillow on the bed. “There's so much more for you to do, see, and learn about than ever before.”
“I'm looking forward to it,” said Christy.
