Inception Cake Recipe
Oscar night is tomorrow! Oscar night is tomorrow!
I'm so excited to watch the Oscars this year that I've been planning for a while to make a special Inception-themed cake to eat during the ceremony. This post contains my recipe for the cake. When I try this idea tomorrow, I will post photos.
barbarafett 's Inception Cake
The four layers of this cake each represent a different dream level from Inception. Rainy Los Angeles is a flan-inspired caramel cake; the hotel (and, particularly, the hotel bar) is a dark, smooth, sophisticated rum mocha cake; the snowy, pine-tree-studded mountain landscape is a minty white cake; and unconstructed, chaotic Limbo is marble cake with rainbow sprinkles. (These are just my ideas, of course; YMMV.)
You may use a different cake mix for each level, or, to save money on cake mix, you may use the white cake mix for both the third layer and the top layer (this is the way I'll be doing it). As each box of cake mix makes enough batter for two 9" round layers, you will need to determine how to use the extra cake batter. I plan to make cupcakes with it.
You Will Need:
1 package marble cake mix (chocolate/vanilla swirl)
1 package white cake mix
1 package chocolate cake mix
1 package yellow cake mix (optional - see note above)
Cooking oil (see directions on cake mix)
Eggs (see directions on cake mix)
Rainbow sprinkles
1 tsp. mint extract
1 tsp. rum extract (or actual rum, that's what I'm using)
1 package (11 oz.) caramel bits
1/3 cup heavy whipping cream (I'm using half-and-half)
6 wooden kebab skewers
2 canisters chocolate frosting
2 canisters vanilla frosting
Black and blue food coloring
Yellow and white decorating frosting (the kind you can draw with by squeezing it out of a tube)
2 (preferably 4) 9" round baking pans
Cupcake pans or other pans to bake the extra cake batter in
1 serving platter
Directions
1. Prepare each cake mix according to the package directions, with the following modifications:
- Marble cake batter: Add the desired amount of rainbow sprinkles to the cake batter before baking.
- White cake batter: If you are using the white cake batter for both the first and third layers, divide it in half and add 1 tsp. mint extract to one half (this will become the third layer), and prepare the other half according to the directions for the yellow cake batter below. If you are only using the white cake batter for the third layer and the yellow for the top layer, just add the mint extract to the white cake batter.
- Chocolate cake batter: Add 1 tsp. rum or rum extract to the cake batter.
- Yellow cake batter: Prepare according to package directions. The idea here is for there to be caramel in the middle; the package of caramel bits I have says that to make brownies with caramel in the middle, you pour half of the brownie mix into a pan, bake it until firm on top, then pour the melted caramel onto it, then pour the rest of the brownie mix on top of that, then bake the whole thing the rest of the way. I'm not sure how well this would work with cake batter. The alternative would be pouring the melted caramel over the top of the cake batter before you start baking it, then baking it normally; I'm not sure which way would work better. This will be an experiment.
2. If you only have two 9" round cake pans, bake the marble and white cake layers first, according to the cake mix package directions. If you have four cake pans, you can bake all of them at once.
3. To make the melted caramel for the top layer (I'm shamelessly stealing the directions off the package of caramel bits here), microwave the caramel bits and the whipping cream (or half-and-half) in a medium microwaveable bowl on High for 2 minutes, stirring every 30 seconds or until the caramel bits begin to melt; stir until completely melted.
4. Pull your top layer (whether it's yellow or white) out briefly about halfway through its baking time and pour the melted caramel onto it (if you're doing it that way), then pour the rest of the batter on top of it and continue baking it.
5. Wait for all cake layers to cool completely before beginning to frost them.
6. While you're waiting for the cake to cool, put some of the white frosting into two small bowls, some of it into a slightly bigger bowl, and leave the rest in the cans. Mix black food coloring into one of the small bowls, making gray frosting, mint extract into the other small bowl, making mint-flavored frosting, and blue food coloring into the bigger bowl, making light-blue frosting.
7. Place the marble layer on the serving platter. Frost only the top of it with chocolate frosting.
8. Place the white cake layer (the one with the mint extract in it) on top of that. Frost the top of it with the mint-flavored frosting.
9. Place the chocolate cake layer on top of that. Frost the top of it with chocolate frosting.
10. Place the cake layer that has the caramel in it (yellow or white) on top of that.
11. Stick the kebab skewers all the way through all four layers to hold them together.
12. Use the light-blue frosting to frost the sides of the cake.
13. Use the gray frosting to frost the top of the cake.
14. Use the white decorating frosting to draw clouds on the sides of the cake, and an airplane, if you're so inclined.
15. Use the white and yellow decorating frosting to decorate the top of the cake to look like the interior of the PASIV Device. (You can refer to the website or to the manual in the back pages of the shooting script, if you have that.)
16. Enjoy!

LOL! :-D Thank you very much! Yes, it's going to be time-consuming, but I'm really looking forward to it. :-)
